Big Monkey Business - Community Kick-Off Event!!!

The Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF) is partnering with local communities including the South Bay, Santa Cruz, and Monterey Burning Man Regions to bring Homouroboros to downtown San Jose for a MONTH starting mid-May – if you’ve experienced Peter Hudson’s incredible monkey & snakes zoetrope, you know it’s a BIG DEAL for us all, for the city, for BRAF, and ultimately, for bringing our amazing desert arts culture to the world. This is your invitation to help shape the future of huge, bold, radically interactive community art in San Jose, and hopefully everywhere!

Here’s everything you need to know to get started:

The Planet’s Most Unique Primate Habitat – San Jose!
Our favorite monkeys inhabit the most amazing illuminated zoetrope ever, and this is BRAF’s most ambitious project to date beyond San Francisco! The city of San Jose is totally behind us and offered the front steps of City Hall, but the monkeys wanted trees. We’re homing in on the perfect spot now, and plan to announce it 3/20. But we just can’t wait to get the word out so you can help make this a reality! We won’t need to design or build Wired’s “wow” award winner from Burning Man 2007, but wowing everyone here with 18 unruly monkeys is still a playa-sized challenge - so we need a lot of participation to pull it off!

Kick-Off Big Monkey Business Thursday 3/20!!!

Please join us to kick off our efforts at a community meeting, hosted by the supportive art lovers at Anno Domini (GalleryAD) in downtown SJ. Ben Lomond-raised artist Peter Hudson will provide his vision, along with luminaries from BRAF and Burning Man HQ. Then we’ll figure out what we need to do down here to make monkeys sing! No host wine & beer, and ART! Lots of free parking nearby, but mind the signs/lots. We need event help like door/greeters, mellow DJ/acoustic background, simple AV, & clean-up – please email sunshine@playatech.com to help, and let’s kick this adventure off right!

Monkey Handlers Needed: pARTicipate!!!

We need leads and supporters in many areas including logistics, installation & dismantling, safety, artist hospitality, events, maintenance during the exhibition, and more. Like to wrench, drill, weld, or solder? Peter needs some help now! Even if you’ve never worked on art, we’ll need hosts at the piece and a chief ambassador, to ensure the public experience is continuously amazing. And we’d love to see individuals, camps or groups take the lead to manifest meaningful gatherings, events, workshops, or other interactive creativity around the installation. Start thinking of ideas, and what to wear!

A full post on volunteer roles and needs will follow soon. In the meantime, please pARTicipate on our team! Send mail to SouthBay@BurningMan.com to volunteer, and join the group at BigMonkeyBusiness-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

Chimp Change Feeds Monkeys!!!

The total project cost will be over $45k, and we need it committed by 3/20 to move forward – seems like a lot, but it is chimp change for large public art! $25k has been provided as part of a generous grant from the James Irvine Foundation, and major BRAF supporters are now increasing the total rapidly.

The monkeys are coming HERE, so it seems right to do our part in our great grass roots American way, yes? No major pressure; donate what you can at the meeting or via paypal. If we want to make the monkeys spin in our jungle, we need to attract them from the savanna with bananas! Don’t forget employer matching programs…

The Evolutionary Power of Monkeys:

Peter’s outrageous monkeys offer us a most amazing chance to bring radically interactive art downtown in a major way, bring diverse people in our city together, integrate technology, art, and community, impact children and future artists, instigate outrageous primate antics among downtown suits, and stimulate many other serendipitous cultural evolutions...

So, let’s all help BRAF make some BIG MONKEY BUSINESS in our backyard before playa fever kicks in, and light a big evolutionary fire in Silicon Valley by letting these crazy monkeys loose in downtown! Please join the team, or send some bananas today!!!

    Hello Monkey lovers!

How come there hasn't been much talk about the Monkeys … were y’all waiting for an official post or something? Oh, okay …

Or, it’s not all exactly official but I’ll tell you what I know. Date are confirmed, no matter what! The piece will be installed and open to the public on May 15th and it will be there through June 15th. We will have some kind of dedication ceremony, depending on various dignitaries’ availability and how many people want to be at the party, and may piggyback this onto the Zero1 festival’s permits on the first weekend of June. Stay tuned for details on that …

We are thisclose to having Discovery Meadow confirmed as our location. There have been several challenges we didn’t expect in getting final signoff and permits, and we still have our Plan B location, Center for Performing Arts, as 100% doable. We just like the Meadow better, so we’re doing everything possible to get there.

Having the site 99.999% confirmed means we have a few tasks and volunteer needs that we’re waiting to announce because they’re contingent on the site. Like, whether or not we’ll need a trencher, landscape architect, etc. depends on if we’ll actually be on grass or concrete. And, we don’t want to print the flyers and postcards for everyone to hand out until we are certain what the location will be! But you all like ambiguity, don’t you? 

Are you talking to your friends, campmates, and work colleagues about the Monkeys? We want to look outside the box … beyond the orange trash fence … and get everyone excited about community art. Have you found the perfect way yet to let people know that some really Big Monkey Business is coming to San Jose?

There are a few things we know we’ll need no matter what, like a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and safety stuff like that which needs to be available for the docents (ambassadors, primatologists, or whatever you want to be called). Also, evening shifts are starting to fill on the docent sign-up sheet, but we’re still looking for theme camps to adopt weekends, and people to volunteer to give their lunch hour and/or play hooky one morning to interact with the business people and school kids who will visit during the day! And finally, we’re looking for an overall Leave No Trace guru for the event (whether we’re in the park or on concrete). If you know of anyone who might not have raised their hand yet, send them to southbay@burningman.com!

And, Peter Hudson still needs people willing to help prepare the piece at his Oakland studio on weekends, and transport and install it to San Jose during the week of May 12th. If you’ve got the muscle, or just like the idea of helping to make the Monkeys beautiful for their San Jose debut, don’t hesitate (there are only 5 work weekends left!)

Got questions? Wondering what’s up? Been thinking about how this can be done? Speak up! This is the place for monkey chatter, remember? BigMonkeyBusiness@yahoogroups.com
